Airbnb screens Los Angeles holiday rentals for party risk
Airbnb is screening Fourth of July bookings that look likely to become unauthorized parties. Los Angeles was one of the markets where the company redirected whole home reservations last year.

Airbnb is relying on a machine learning screening system during the Fourth of July period to limit unauthorized parties in short term rentals. The system weighs indicators such as whether a booking is local and whether it is for only one or two days, then may steer flagged guests toward private rooms or hotels instead of whole homes.
Company figures for last Fourth of July list more than 20,000 U.S. whole home booking attempts deterred, including about 2,500 in California and roughly 200 in Los Angeles. Airbnb says party reports were under 0.06% of U.S. stays in 2025, while Carnegie Mellon professor Param Vir Singh warned that large scale consumer data systems can still misread some bookings.
