USC seeks limits in student film death case

USC wants a Chatsworth judge to bar claims that Chinese students needed stricter oversight before a negligence trial. The case stems from a 2022 off road vehicle crash that killed cinematographer Peng Wang during a student film shoot.

Peng Wang, a 29 year old cinematographer and Chapman University film student, died while working on a USC student film production in 2022. The complaint says a Can-Am all terrain vehicle driven by producer Biangliang Li overturned at Glamis Dunes east of Brawley during work on the film Finale.

USC's pretrial request targets claims that students from China should have been monitored more closely because they were less trustworthy or more likely to violate safety rules. The university argues those claims are discriminatory and irrelevant; trial is scheduled for June 22 in Chatsworth Superior Court.
