The crash happened just after 11 a.m. at Edwards Air Force Base, closing the airfield Tuesday while crews dealt with small fires in the area. Officials had not released the victims' names pending family notification, and Boeing confirmed that two employees were among the crew.

The Air Force had announced B-52 testing at Edwards tied to new radar systems and planned engine replacements. Officials have not said what caused the crash or whether it involved the same aircraft that had been moved through earlier upgrade work.
