Supporters of Measure ER declared victory Tuesday after the yes side moved just above 50% in updated Los Angeles County vote totals. The proposal adds 0.5 cent to the county sales tax for every dollar spent, with revenue directed to hospitals and clinics facing funding gaps after federal cuts.

County officials expect about $1 billion a year from the tax. It is set to begin Oct. 1 and run for five years, making the result important for patients, health providers and shoppers who would pay the higher tax in LA County.
