Rehabilitation physician Liu Tsan-hung of Taipei Medical University Municipal Wanfang Hospital spoke at a Los Angeles seminar hosted by AHMC HealthCare and Taipei Medical University. More than 100 Southern California residents attended the talk on how sarcopenia can affect walking, swallowing, daily tasks and fall risk.

Liu said simple checks such as calf size, grip strength and difficulty lifting objects can help people spot possible muscle loss. He emphasized strength training and enough protein after age 50, including eggs, tofu, fish or meat at each meal, because walking alone may not do enough to protect muscle.
